More Than Just a To-Do List: Can Daily Routines Really Transform Your Life?

Dinacharya is a Sanskrit word composed of “Dina,” meaning day, and “Acharya,” meaning activity/behavior. It is designed to maintain and connect with our circadian rhythm, or internal body clock. While Ayurveda's emphasis on living in harmony with nature's biorhythms has existed for thousands of years, Western scientists, through their studies of circadian rhythms, are now beginning to highlight the importance of our bodies remaining connected to nature's rhythm. Circadian rhythms examine 24-hour cycles, considering "light" as the most important signal for starting the day.

Dinacharya is a series of rituals and practices that allow us to naturally align ourselves with the changing energies throughout the day, so that we live in harmony with nature, not against it. It's the complete opposite of living on autopilot. What Ayurveda means by aligning with nature is waking up with the sunrise and preparing for sleep at sunset, transitioning to a calm, slow pace. Dinacharya (daily routines) help us find balance, regulate our biological clock, and strengthen our immune system. This routine brings us peace, happiness, and longevity, and facilitates digestion and elimination.

Let's take a closer look at our morning routines...

  • Waking up with the sun: Sticking to a scheduled wake-up time helps your body and mind establish a rhythm for easily starting your daily activities.
  • Face Wash: Cool water is soothing and invigorating for the face, mouth, and eyes. It gives a feeling of freshness to the body and mind.
  • Toothbrushing: Brush your teeth with a toothpaste with clean ingredients to prevent cavities and plaque buildup. Ancient texts recommend using bitter, pungent, and astringent flavors to clean teeth.
  • Tongue Scraping: This helps cleanse the body of toxins that have accumulated in the stomach from the previous day's food and during sleep. Tongue scraping stimulates the digestive system.
  • Oil pulling: Rinsing and holding your mouth with sesame or coconut oil helps improve taste while strengthening teeth, gums, jaw, and voice.
  • Nasya (Nasal Oil): Nasya oil cleans and protects nasal passages, nourishes tissues, promotes clear breathing and a calm mind.
  • Drinking Warm Water: Drinking a large glass of warm water cleanses, awakens, and hydrates the digestive system. It cleanses tissues and stimulates bowel movement.
  • Bowel Movements: A bowel movement every morning is a sign of a healthy digestive system. If you're not having a bowel movement every day, review your diet.
  • Warm Oil Massage (Abhyanga): Massaging yourself with warm oil soothes the nervous system, moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin, and promotes healthy circulation.
  • Shower: Washing will cleanse the body and bring energy and alertness. If you have performed Abhyanga, rinsing the skin with warm water will be sufficient to remove excess oil.
  • Meditation: Meditation and breathing exercises are ideal for early mornings. These practices affect the flow of the day, providing strength and calmness to cope with daily stress.

Embrace the Journey, Not the Destination:

Dinacharya might seem overwhelming at first glance. But remember, it's a journey, not a destination. Dinacharya isn't a rigid rulebook, it's a flexible framework. Adapt it to your lifestyle. Start with a few practices you can easily integrate into your day. Perhaps something like drinking a glass of warm water in the morning. Begin with a few practices that work for you and gradually build a routine that feels natural. Consistency is key – even small changes can make a big difference to your overall health.
